Morgan House

In the jute baron's colonial villa on Durpin Hill, high heels are heard tapping down the corridors at night.

Morgan House was built in the 1930s by British jute baron George Morgan as a wedding gift for his wife, high on Durpin Hill in Kalimpong with views of Kanchenjunga. The marriage is said to have been unhappy, and local legend holds that Mrs Morgan suffered before her death – her restless spirit never leaving the house. The villa now operates as a state-run heritage hotel, and guests and staff tell of high-heeled footsteps tapping along the corridors at night. Staff are even said to hand anxious guests a Bible to keep under their pillow.
