In Block Five, where three young revolutionaries shot Inspector Simpson in 1930, his footsteps are said to echo still.
Writers' Building, the grand colonial secretariat in central Kolkata, was the stage for one of the independence struggle's most dramatic acts. On 8 December 1930, young revolutionaries Benoy, Badal and Dinesh entered disguised in European dress and shot dead prisons inspector N.S. Simpson, infamous for torturing political prisoners. After the gunfight the three took their own lives or were condemned to death. Guards have since told of echoing footsteps, laughter and sudden cries in Block Five where Simpson fell – today the building's most avoided section after dark.
