Fortune Theatre
Otago · Nya Zeeland · Theatre
In the Gothic church turned theatre, sinister voices sound from offstage and a phantom audience member lingers when the house should be empty.
Dunedin's Fortune Theatre moved in 1977 into a Gothic Methodist church from 1870 designed by architect R.A. Lawson, and the ghost stories began almost at once. Actors told of sinister voices offstage and of properly secured lights that still fell from the rig. Theatregoers repeatedly reported an audience member who wasn't there — a figure seated in the house one moment and gone the next. When the TV show Ghost Hunt investigated in 2005, a photograph was produced that is said to show a young woman floating through a wall in the foyer, beside one of the church windows. The theatre closed in 2018, but the tales live on in Dunedin folklore.
