Vulcan Hotel

Central Otago · Nya Zeeland · Hotel

At the gold-rush hotel in St Bathans, the strangled prostitute Rose still haunts Room 1 — and she only goes after men.

The Vulcan Hotel was built of mud brick in 1882 in the gold-mining town of St Bathans and is often called New Zealand's most haunted building. In the 1880s a young prostitute known as Rose worked here, until a client strangled her, stole her savings of gold and dumped her body in the nearby lake. Her killer was never caught, and Rose is said to have occupied Room 1 ever since. Male guests have woken to invisible hands pinning them to the bed and gripping their throats, while lights cut out, doors lock themselves and footsteps echo down the corridor.
