Publican Donald Fraser was shotgunned in his bed in 1933 — the murder was never solved, and he is said to still search the hotel's corridors for his killer.
One November night in 1933, someone crept into the Racecourse Hotel beside Riccarton racecourse in Christchurch and fired both barrels of a shotgun into the chest of publican Donald Fraser. Despite one of the largest murder investigations the South Island had seen, neither weapon nor killer was ever found, and the case remains unsolved to this day. A tangled love life, a mistress in Wellington and his wife's inconsistent testimony gave detectives plenty to chew on but never an arrest. Ever since, Fraser's ghost is said to walk the hotel's corridors at night, forever hunting the one who took his life.
