Piwhane, or Spirits Bay, is a remote, windswept bay at the northern tip of New Zealand and one of the country's most spiritually charged places. In Maori belief, the spirits of the dead travel north along the islands to this coast, gathering here before departing the world at Te Rerenga Wairua, the leaping place of spirits at Cape Reinga. An ancient pohutukawa tree on the headland is said to be the gateway itself, its roots the ladder down which the spirits climb toward the sea. Visitors describe the bay as uncannily still — beautiful and eerie at once, a place where the veil between worlds feels thin.
