The Dominicans came to Krakow in 1222 at the invitation of Bishop Iwo Odrowaz, and more accounts of inexplicable things have gathered around their basilica on Stolarska than around any other church in the city. The most persistent figure is a young girl who appears by the steps down to the crypt; tradition calls her Eleonora Lubomirska and says she never left the family vault. At the tomb of St Hyacinth people have reported for centuries that torches float above the stone floor with nobody carrying them, and that at dusk voices gather around the saint's coffin sounding more like lamentation than prayer. To this the tellers add the shades of buried bishops, who according to the legend found no rest until debts they left behind were settled by the living.
