The Church on the Rock (Skalka)

Kraków · Poland · Church

Bishop Stanislaus was cut to pieces here. Eagles guarded the parts, a fish swallowed one finger, and the body grew together without a scar.

The church on the rock in Kazimierz is where Bishop Stanislaus of Szczepanow was killed in 1079 on the order of King Boleslaw the Bold, in the middle of mass. The chronicles of Kadlubek and Dlugosz go further than the history: the body is said to have been quartered and the pieces thrown down in front of the church, where four eagles stood guard over them until the limbs joined again by themselves without leaving a single scar. One finger was missing, swallowed by a fish in the pool, but an eagle came down, took the fish and returned the relic. The pool in front of the church is still there, with a baroque figure of the bishop and four eagles on pillars. For centuries its water was drawn to drink or to bathe in, and pilgrims counted off the sick who walked away well.
