Stare Powazki was consecrated in 1792 and is Warsaw's oldest surviving burial ground: 228 metres of catacombs and close to a million burials under century-old trees. Its most talked-about revenant has a name and a date. General Ignacy Blumer is said to lie still for 364 days a year, but on the anniversary of the November Uprising he is seen standing upright at his own grave, looking towards the city centre. The same general is described walking the main avenue in the shape of a beggar with a rose in his hand, a gesture tied to his love for his dead wife. Other visitors speak only of a figure in a black cloak moving among the hundred-year-old tombs on nights of full moon and vanishing when approached. Warsaw has never made much of it; here the dead are part of the streetscape.
