The tenement at Nowogrodzka 14 was the home of Maria Wisnowska, born in 1859, the most talked-about actress on the Warsaw stage and known as the Carmen of Nowogrodzka. She played femmes fatales in melodrama, recited poetry in the salons and was named as the heir to Helena Modrzejewska. In the summer of 1890 her life ended in this house, in a scandal that occupied the whole city for months. Warsaw folklore has never let her go: she is said to be unable to part from her favourite building and to be there still, with steps on the stairs, doors that open by themselves and small pranks played on the tenants. At her grave in Powazki cemetery, the story goes, a red rose is always lying, whatever the season and whoever was there last.
