The baroque palace of the 1720s on Solidarnosci avenue was moved bodily and rebuilt, but according to the people who work there the ghost came along. After Jan Zawisza's death the house passed to his wife Elzbieta and their daughter, and the legend says Countess Elzbieta Branicka died in one of its rooms and never left it. She is described in the enfilade and on the stairs, always silent, always the same stretch. The palace also has a second and considerably stranger ghost: an old Chinese man who by the telling shows himself only twice in a thousand years, which makes him the least troublesome thing the building offers. The palace now houses the Museum of Independence, and the staff speak of both figures with resignation rather than fear.
