Church of St Benedict
Kraków · Poland · Church
The Black Princess lives under the steps of the tiny church. She hands out gold, and tears the head off anyone who breaks her one condition.
The miniature church on Lasota hill is the oldest brick building in Podgorze and opens to visitors on a single day each year, the Tuesday after Easter. Beneath its steps, the legend says, lives the Czarna Ksiezniczka, the Black Princess, guarding an immense treasure and freed only by a man who loves her and marries her. One young suitor climbed the hill at midnight and was handed a purse of money on one condition: he had to spend all of it on himself within three days and give away nothing. Crossing the bridge on the last day he met a beggar and handed over his final coins. The princess showed no mercy and tore his head from his shoulders, exactly as she had promised. Another version makes her a cruel ruler struck dead by lightning.
