Ogrodzieniec Castle

A giant black dog dragging a rattling chain is said to guard Ogrodzieniec – the trapped soul of the cruel castellan Warszycki.

Ogrodzieniec is the largest ruin on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, a vast Renaissance castle built into the limestone crags of the Jura. Its most feared apparition is an enormous black dog with glowing eyes that prowls the walls at night, dragging a heavy chain. Legend holds that the dog is the trapped soul of castellan Stanisław Warszycki, notorious for tormenting his subjects and wives – condemned to walk the earth in animal form. The ruin's dramatic silhouette has drawn film crews from around the world, including Netflix's The Witcher.
