The reputation of Mont'Alto is about overcrowding. By some accounts 350 tuberculosis patients were at times housed in a building with fifty beds, and stories of neglect and agonising deaths have followed the place ever since it was abandoned. Visitors report footsteps, voices and shadows in the wrecked corridors, and the ruin has also drawn rumours of occult rituals at night — traces of fires and symbols have been found in the wards.

The sanatorium above Valongo outside Porto took patients between 1958 and 1975, in the last years before antibiotics made such institutions redundant. Since then the windows have been smashed, the roofs have fallen in and the forest has crept closer — today it is one of northern Portugal's most notorious haunted sites.
