Glinki Estate (Bruce Estate)

Moskva oblast · Ryssland · Manor

At sorcerer Jacob Bruce's estate the pond is said to have frozen in midsummer – and the warlock count's ghost still guards his hidden books.

The Glinki estate on the River Vorya belonged to Jacob Bruce, Peter the Great's Scottish-descended field marshal and scientist, who in popular lore became Russia's most notorious sorcerer. Peasants told of iron dragons flying in through the manor windows, of a mechanical doll Bruce built that could walk and talk but had no soul, and of the pond he froze in midsummer so his guests could skate. After his death in 1735 arose the legend of a hidden book of black magic, and his ghost is still said to appear at the estate searching for his lost grave. The main house with its grimacing mascarons survives on the grounds of the Monino sanatorium.
