Miserly old Kusovnikov is said to still shuffle along Myasnitskaya in a shabby coat, asking passers-by: "Where is my money?"

In the 19th century the notoriously stingy Kusovnikov couple lived at 17 Myasnitskaya Street, keeping no servants and counting their riches through the night. Legend has it they once hid their money chest in the stove before a journey, whereupon the caretaker lit a fire and the fortune went up in flames; the wife is said to have died of shock on the spot. Ever since, the old major-general's ghost reportedly appears at dusk along the street, lamenting his lost money. Meeting him is said to foretell unexpected expenses – one of Moscow's best-known ghost tales.
