A hunchbacked old woman with a cane has allegedly appeared in Ostankino for centuries bearing omens of doom – last seen at the TV centre before bloodshed.
Around the Sheremetev family's wooden palace in Ostankino and the nearby television centre circulates what may be Moscow's oldest ghost story: a hunchbacked old woman who appears before disaster. As early as the 1550s she is said to have warned the boyar Alexei Satin against ploughing the land – he was executed soon after. In 1856 she reportedly told Alexander II he would reign for twenty-five years and die at the hand of a godless man, which came true in 1881. Guards and TV staff claim she appeared in October 1993 saying "there will be blood here" just before the fighting at the television centre, and she is still regarded as Ostankino's ominous guardian.
