At Reed in Gloppen lived Kristen, who owned the black book. One day while he was away his children read the devil free. Kristen met him on the way home and first set him to gather scattered grains of gunpowder, then to bail all of Lake Breim dry. Such spray and drift had never been seen over the water, but it gave Kristen time to reach home and bind the devil before he did more harm.
