Svarte-Mons's Servant and the Channel Nes-løypti, Jostedal
Sogn og Fjordane · Norway · Natural site
Returning home with the black book, the servant read the devil loose – and his labour left a channel in the mountain.
In Jostedal the priest Svarte-Mons sent his servant to fetch the forgotten black book from Nes, but warned him not to open it. The temptation grew too great, and the servant read the devil free. He set him first to carry forest and ground down to the sea – the channel in the mountain is called Nes-løypti to this day – then to twist rope from sand on the seabed, so the servant reached home and the priest bound him.
