Lazy Anders and the Grindstone Men

Nyland · Finland · Sägenplats · Scare 3/5

When the idler flung down his scythe and swore all devils could sharpen it, he met man after man bearing a grindstone.

Kal-Anders of Sibbo was the laziest man in the village and never lifted a hand. When one summer day he was forced out to mow and his scythe kept striking stones and stumps, he hurled the tool away and shouted that all the devils could sharpen it. On the way home he then met one man after another, each with a grindstone on his back and a horse's foot beneath him, all heading the same way. With every meeting they grew smaller, the last no bigger than an infant.
