A captain bought riches from the dark one, but tricked him with a task that could not be done.

In Helsinge a sea captain struck a bargain with the dark one and had all the money he wished for ten years. When the time was up, he had his carpenters cut a hatch-covered hole in the ship's hull. Then he set the devil to pump the ship dry, secretly opening the hatch so the water rose despite all his pumping. At last the dark one gave up and fled in a blue flame.
