Whoever steals one of Ko Hin Ngam's black stones falls under the curse of the Tarutao spirit — and parcels of remorsefully returned stones still arrive today.
Ko Hin Ngam is a small uninhabited island in Tarutao National Park, covered in black, sea-polished stones. According to legend, the guardian spirit Chao Pho Tarutao has cursed anyone who carries a stone away: bad luck, illness and ruin follow the thief until the stone is returned. Every year, park rangers receive parcels from remorseful tourists around the world sending stones back with letters of apology. A wealthy businessman who defied the ban is said to have been shot dead soon afterwards. A sign on the island now warns visitors to leave the stones where they lie.
