On the extinct volcano of Phanom Rung, a towering hungry ghost is said to frighten nighttime visitors among the Khmer ruins.

Phanom Rung is a magnificent Khmer temple from the tenth to thirteenth centuries, built on the summit of an extinct volcano in Buriram and dedicated to the god Shiva. After nightfall, a preta — a starving spirit several metres tall — is said to have confronted guards and villagers on the stairways leading up to the sanctuary. The mountain's long history of worship, cremations and royal processions feeds the belief that the place never quite sleeps. During the sun festivals in April, thousands crowd the temple's famous alignment of light — but few linger after dusk.
