Prinkipo Greek Orphanage

Istanbul · Turkiet · Abandoned site

From Europe's largest timber building, the abandoned orphanage on Buyukada, children's voices and sobbing are said to echo in the dark.

The colossal timber structure on Buyukada's highest hill was built in 1898 as a luxury hotel but instead became a Greek Orthodox orphanage, until it closed in 1964. Since then the giant building — the largest wooden structure in Europe — has slowly crumbled behind the trees. Islanders and night-time visitors tell of children's laughter, sobbing and running footsteps from the ruin, and of voices rising from the old well in the yard; many avoid the place after dark. Derelict and fenced off today, the orphanage remains the most talked-about haunted spot on the Princes' Islands.
