In this desolate medieval graveyard, the graves of a mother and her infant are said to have refused, again and again, to stay apart.

Beside a lonely mosque from 1335, midway between the villages of Seyvan and Cakiroba in Yenice, Canakkale, lies the small burial ground known as Issiz Cuma — the desolate Friday mosque. Local legend tells that a young mother and her twenty-day-old daughter were buried in separate graves, yet time after time the graves were found merged into one, no matter how often they were parted. Villagers consider the spot tekinsiz — uncanny — and avoid it after dark. The forgotten mosque and its leaning headstones make this one of Turkey's most talked-about places of folk haunting.
