Aydos Castle
Istanbul · Turkiet · Castle ruin
The commander's daughter dreamed of the man who pulled her from the pit — and then recognised him among the besiegers below the wall.
On Istanbul's highest point, a forested summit east of the city, stand the ruins of a Byzantine castle. Aşıkpaşazade wrote down the legend of how it fell. The night before the siege the commander's daughter dreamed she lay in a deep pit and that an unknown man came, pulled her out, washed her and dressed her in new clothes. When the Ottoman troops then camped below the wall she saw the man from her dream among them: Abdurrahman Gazi. She wrote a message, wrapped it around a stone and threw it out. Pretend to withdraw, come back in the dark, and I will open the gate. So it went. In the sequel they married and had children, and chroniclers have retold the story for five hundred years. Of the castle only wall stumps and one tower remain in the forest.
