The owner never moved into his palace — but at night women's heels click along the corridor above the great marble staircase.

The Genoese shipowner Ignazio Corpi built his palace in Pera with marble and paintings shipped from Italy, and died before it was finished. His family leased it to the American legation instead, and for over a century the building served as the United States embassy and later consulate. The legend attached to the house concerns two deaths. Corpi himself is said to have died almost at the moment he was to take possession, and a young maid with whom he was rumoured to have had an affair fell on the great marble staircase and died in circumstances nobody cared to explain. Guests and staff have ever since described the sound of women's heels clicking through the empty corridors at night. Nobody has ever found the step that gave way.
