Zeyrek Mosque in the Fatih district was once the church of the Pantokrator Monastery, built in the 12th century as the monastery and burial church of Byzantine emperors, and converted to a mosque after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Around the old building and the lanes below it, stories have long been told of a sealed-up well and underground passages from which night-time screams were said to rise, never traced to any source. The quarter's leaning timber houses and the church's thousand-year-old walls give the tales a fitting backdrop. The area is today a UNESCO World Heritage site.
