Jinxin Building
Taipei · Taiwan · House
Hundreds of ancestral tablets stand ranked on the sixth floor, wall to wall with the tenants — and the lifts move by themselves.
On the sixth floor of the Jinxin Building, hundreds of ancestral memorial tablets stand ranked in a hall, sharing a wall with the tenants' apartments. Temple masters have been called in to quiet the building. Residents report lifts that move by themselves and shadows in the corridors — but the rents are low, and the block stays full.
The tower at the corner of Jinzhou Street and Xinsheng North Road was once the Times Hotel, until a fire in 1984 turned it into an inferno: nineteen people died, several jumping from windows, because the emergency exits were kept locked. A second fire in 1996 and a run of suicides, accidents and a notorious double murder have since earned it the name 'Taipei's foremost building of misfortune' — around thirty lives in forty years.
