Xining Public Housing

Taipei · Taiwan · Urban site

The fourth floor lies in permanent darkness around a bottomless light shaft — and over thirty people have died in the 'ghost house of Wanhua'.

The building's labyrinthine corridors run around a light shaft that never seems to reach a bottom, and the fourth floor lies in permanent darkness — four is the number of death. That gave the complex its name, the ghost house: residents told of shadows, knocking and lifts that took off on their own.

The first death is said to have been an old soldier who forgot his keys and fell to his death trying to climb in by the facade. After that came falls, suicides, a murder out of jealousy and lifts that stopped with dead passengers inside — over thirty lives in four decades, in a block completed in 1981. The Wanhua complex has been condemned and is now being emptied to make way for new housing.
