The Detroit Masonic Temple was built in 1912 for the Masons and is the largest building of its kind in the world. It has more than a thousand rooms, a great many concealed passages, and compartments built into the floors.

The story attached holds that the architect, George D Mason, went broke financing it, that his wife left him after the bankruptcy, and that in despair he jumped from the roof.

Mason did not jump. He lived until 1948, continued working, and remained one of the most significant architects in Michigan. The building did not ruin him.

Night watchmen are the ones who report what happens inside, which is the most credible category of witness a building this size can produce, since they walk all thousand rooms of it alone.

The temple is still in use as a theatre and event venue, and parts of it have been closed for decades.
