The cemetery on the hill, Westland Meadows

Michigan · United States · Cemetery

A small wooded burial ground sits fenced on a hill in the middle of a Michigan trailer park. The Eloise asylum is next door.

There is a small hill toward the centre of the trailer park at Westland, Michigan, and on top of it, wooded and fenced off, is a very old cemetery.

Getting a look at it takes a high enough vehicle and the right approach from the office end, and then you can just make out the tops of the stones. The dates are said to run back to the 1800s.

What gives the site its weight is what stands next door. The Eloise complex was the Wayne County poorhouse, asylum and hospital, and at its height it held thousands of people. Those who died there without family to claim them were buried nearby, in numbered graves.

The hill is the sort of thing that gets fenced and forgotten when land changes hands.

People live in the park and it is not somewhere to go looking.
