Cruz do Patrão

Pernambuco · Brazil · Haunted site

By the stone cross in Recife's harbour, moans and dragging chains are heard from those buried in the sand.

The whitewashed pillar with its cross was raised in the 18th century as a seamark at the entrance to Recife's harbour. By tradition, enslaved Africans who died aboard arriving ships were buried in the sand at its foot, nameless and without rites. Ever since, the spot has ranked among Brazil's most haunted: passers-by report wailing, dragging chains and figures moving in the dark around the cross. To this day many dock workers avoid the place after nightfall.
