Bytown Museum — Ontario · Kanada · Museum

In Ottawa's oldest stone building, canal clerk Duncan McNab is said to still trail visitors up the stairs.

Built in 1827 beside the Rideau Canal locks, this old commissariat warehouse is now Ottawa's most talked-about haunted building. The third floor is said to belong to Duncan McNab, a commissary officer with a trickster streak who allegedly shoves visitors, moves locked-away objects and follows people around. Staff report crying sounds from the doll exhibit, televisions switching themselves on and cold spots that appear from nowhere. Some even claim to have heard Colonel John By, the canal's builder, arguing with McNab in empty rooms.
