The railway magnate who went down with the Titanic twelve days before opening night is said to have never left his dream hotel in Ottawa.

The castle-like Château Laurier in Ottawa was commissioned by railway magnate Charles Melville Hays, who set out to build Canada's finest hotel. Sailing home for the opening, he boarded the Titanic and drowned when the ship sank on 15 April 1912 — just twelve days before his hotel was due to open. Staff have long maintained that Hays never left: doors open and close by themselves, furniture moves and breaks, and a figure resembling his historical photographs has been seen in the corridors. The hotel stands beside Parliament Hill and remains one of Ottawa's best-known landmarks.
