Teufelssee at the foot of the Müggel hills is a gloomy ice-age pool ringed by dark firs and quaking bog, its water almost black. According to Berlin legend, a magnificent castle once stood here, marked by the Prinzessinnenstein – the princess stone in the reeds. The castle was cursed and sank into the mire together with its princess. On Midsummer Night she rises from the depths and trims the hem of her black dress with the lake's yellow water lilies. A foreign knight once tried to redeem her by carrying her three times around Köpenick's great church at midnight; after two rounds he was beset by serpents and fire-breathing creatures, fainted – and everything vanished. Her treasure is said to lie twenty fathoms deep beneath a white stone, guarded by a dark water spirit, and on full-moon nights the castle appears – but only to lovers.
