Esterházy Palace, Fertőd

Győr-Moson-Sopron · Ungern · Palace

At night a dark figure on a white horse – the Ghost Rider of the Esterházy family – is said to circle the Hungarian Versailles.

The baroque palace at Fertőd, often called the Hungarian Versailles, was the showpiece residence of the princely Esterházy family and Joseph Haydn's workplace for decades. The palace has its own Ghost Rider legend: a dark figure on a white horse said to appear around the grounds at night, by tradition a family member who met a tragic end and never found rest. Visitors have described sudden cold drafts sweeping the state rooms, as if someone unseen were passing down the corridors. Today the palace is a museum and concert venue – but the park after dark leaves few unmoved.
