In the late nineteenth century, Bishop Eulogio Gillow built an English-style castle on an islet in an artificial lake at the old Chautla hacienda. The estate was looted during the Mexican Revolution and fell into decay, and ever since, people have told of the ghosts of revolutionary soldiers moving along the water at night. Visitors also speak of a female figure by the lake and of an old doll linked to strange happenings inside the castle. Chautla is a popular day trip today — but the rumours of the restless dead have never gone quiet.
