La Llorona drags her wail along the old lakeshore — and an enchanted stone in the woods is said to swallow whoever sits on it.

The wooded park around the springs of Tlalpan carries two of the southern city's most persistent legends. The first is La Llorona, the weeping woman in white, said to have trailed her cry along this water since viceregal times and still heard by those who linger after dark — a drawn-out ay, mis hijos from the direction of the pond. The second concerns the enchanted stone, la piedra encantada: a rock among the trees that neighbours say swallows anyone who sits on it at the wrong hour, and to which several stories of vanished walkers are attached. Park staff say visitors regularly come back to the gate to ask who it was they heard crying down by the water, and are not satisfied by the answer that nobody was there.
