The red-painted house on Higuera in Coyoacán is known locally as the house of La Malinche. History disagrees: the ground floor was raised in the eighteenth century, long after Malintzin's death, as Mexico's heritage institute has pointed out. The legend survives regardless. Residents of the La Conchita quarter say laments are heard behind the wall at night, and they attribute them to Malintzin — the interpreter and adviser of the conquest — said to walk the passages of the house weighed down by grief over her role. In many versions she is the same figure as La Llorona, the woman in white who weeps for her children across Latin America. Neighbours warn anyone lingering at the gate late not to answer if a voice calls.
