Los Dínamos de Contreras
Mexico City · Mexiko · Forest
The witches are said to circle above the river valley — and from the Monk's Cave comes an old prayer nobody says any more.
The mountain forest at the top of Magdalena Contreras is the wildest corner of the city and carries two legends the locals take seriously. The first concerns the witches of Los Dínamos, said by the neighbouring villages to circle as lights above the river valley at night and to draw lone walkers further up the trail. The second belongs to the Monk's Cave, la Cueva del Monje, a rock chamber said to have been cut by the first Franciscan friars, with the four evangelists carved around its mouth. When the forest falls silent, the stories say, a murmur rises from inside the stone like an old prayer. Hikers near the Cuarto Dínamo describe a sudden, total solitude followed by the sense of being watched.
