From the halls of this abandoned school palace in George Town, a woman's screams are still said to echo – a remnant of the Japanese occupation's torture cellars.

This grand mansion on Northam Road was built in the 1880s for Chinese tycoon Cheah Tek Soon and served as a consulate, hotel and girls' school before becoming the Shih Chung Branch School in 1938. During the Japanese occupation of 1941–1945 the army took the building as a headquarters, and captives are said to have been tortured and killed in its cellars. Since the school closed in 1994 the house has decayed behind hoardings, and passers-by tell of a woman's screams from the empty halls and figures in the windows. It ranks today among Penang's most notorious haunted addresses.
