Villa Nabila
Johor · Malaysia · Haunted house
In this abandoned villa above Danga Bay, the heiress Nabila is said to have been sealed into a wall – and her ghost still guards the house.
This decaying 1930s villa on a hill above Danga Bay in Johor Bahru ranks among Malaysia's most notorious haunted places. In the most widespread version of the legend, young Nabila inherited the house and the family fortune but was murdered by a jealous maid, who hid the body in a wall behind a layer of cement – and her restless spirit has guarded the villa ever since. In 2013 a viral rumour claimed 23 teenagers had vanished inside, prompting a police operation; the story proved exaggerated but made the villa famous nationwide and inspired a horror film. Today the building stands overgrown and watched, and night-time visitors are turned away.
