Noordeinde Palace in The Hague is the working palace of the Dutch king, with origins in the sixteenth century. In the days of King Willem III, Queen Sophie held a séance with the famed spiritualist Daniel Dunglas Home in the room where her little son Prince Maurits had died: a handkerchief and a heavy golden bell are said to have floated through the air, the spirits tapped out words letter by letter, and the queen felt a cold hand grasp her finger. Ever since, a small shadowy figure is said to inhabit the prince's former bedroom. The palace is closed to the public, so the ghost can haunt in peace.
