A murdered man from the East Indies is said to watch over the guests – the ghost who became the estate's guardian.

Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg in Santpoort was once the largest private residence in the Netherlands and is now a luxury hotel amid the dunes of Zuid-Kennemerland. When the estate's owner brought servants over from the Dutch East Indies, legend says the spirit of a murdered man travelled with them – killed by one of the staff and unable to rest until his murderer was punished. But when the ghost realised the man he suspected was innocent, shame overcame him, and he vowed instead to watch over every guest in the house. Night staff have testified that they always felt safe there – except during the great renovation, when the guardian seemed to be gone.
