At witch-island Siquijor's 400-year-old balete tree, the nature spirits themselves are said to hold court among the roots.

On Siquijor – popularly called the island of witches for its traditions of folk healing and sorcery – stands a balete tree said to be over 400 years old. According to local belief the tree is home to engkanto, nature spirits who favour the respectful and punish those who are not, and balete trees are regarded throughout the Philippines as dwellings of spirit beings. At the foot of the tree a spring emerges, forming a natural pool now known as a free fish spa. The combination of the giant's twisted aerial roots, the spring water and the island's reputation makes this Siquijor's most storied spot.
