Manila Hotel
Manila · Filippinerna · Hotel
On the storied Manila Hotel's fifteenth floor, a guest who took their own life is said to still switch the appliances on.
The Manila Hotel opened in 1912 and has hosted presidents, writers and General MacArthur, who lived here in the years before World War II. During the Battle of Manila in 1945 the hotel became the scene of fierce fighting and fires in which many died. Its best-known legend concerns the fifteenth floor, where a guest is said to have died by suicide: staff and guests tell of televisions and lamps switching themselves on, footsteps in empty corridors and a sense of presence in certain rooms. The hotel remains in full operation – historic, elegant, and with a past that chafes at night.
