Branicki Palace on Nowy Swiat
Warszawa · Poland · Palace
Baroness Anna Branicka fell down the palace staircase and died. Her white figure still walks the same short stretch of corridor.
The neo-renaissance palace at Nowy Swiat 18/20 took its present form between 1853 and 1856, when Henryk Marconi rebuilt it for Roza Potocka Branicka. The house ghost is called simply the Biala Dama, the White Lady, and the name tradition attaches to her is Baroness Anna Branicka. By the telling she died after a fall down the palace staircase, and it is the staircase that holds her. She is described in white, always silent, always along the same short stretch of corridor and always close to the flight of steps that killed her. Warsaw guides count her among the capital's oldest resident apparitions, and the people who work on Nowy Swiat speak of her as part of the address rather than as a threat.
