The king never left his island. Late visitors in Lazienki say a fortepiano can be heard inside the locked and empty palace.

Stanislaw August Poniatowski turned a baroque bathing pavilion into the Palace on the Isle and made it the place he loved best of everything he owned. In 1795 he was forced to leave it, and he died far from Warsaw without seeing the island again. The park legend says he never accepted that. He is described walking the paths between the water and the amphitheatre after dark, slowly and looking at nobody, and from the locked palace, on still evenings, a fortepiano is said to carry across the pond, though there is nobody inside to play it. Visitors who linger past closing time report it more often than the museum would like. The rooms are otherwise left exactly as he left them.
