Radziejowice Palace

Warszawa · Poland · Palace

Primate Radziejowski shut his mistress in the hole beneath the tower. She lost her mind and died, and still searches the halls for him.

Forty kilometres west of Warsaw stands a palace with a medieval tower at its core, today a house for artists. The last Radziejowski to own the estate was Michal, Primate of Poland, whose office did not stop him filling the house with balls, feasts and mistresses. One of them, the legend says, spoke too freely about what went on behind the primate's doors. He had her shut in the hole beneath the tower, where her mind gave way and she died. Since then the Biala Dama, the White Lady, walks the halls of the palace looking for her cruel lover. Guests, artists and film crews staying in the house have kept the story alive into our own time, and the staff are asked about her more often than about the architecture.
